I got started in this a few years ago. I think my initial equipment purchase plus the ingredients for my first batch of beer was $100. Just the ingredients are now about $40, but if my hop rhizomes take off, I'll save some money there.
If you like any old beer, it's not cheap. If you like specific types of beer and like to experiment, in my opinion the price is decent. The $40 I pay now for ingredients yields about a couple of cases. You can play around with recipes and try to narrow down to what taste you really like. Just like wine, there are lots an lots of varieties, but beer takes much less time and effort to make.
